Safety on all wheels
Posted on: June 8, 2026
Drivers, know that the summer months means more kids will be out and about. Always obey traffic signals and speed limits, and keep your focus on the road. (Remember: Paul’s Miller’s Law makes it illegal to hold your phone or use it unless you are summoning help in an emergency. Use your in-dash phone integration, if you have it.)
Parents, please talk to your children about the rules that apply to bikes and scooters. Make sure children on pedal cycles are wearing helmets every ride and using lights at night.
Remember that all recreational wheels — bikes, skates, skateboards, hoverboards, etc. — are prohibited on the sidewalks in business districts (Washington Road, Beverly Road.) You can either walk these items through the few blocks of the district or plan your route using the nearby parallel side streets. Accessibility wheels, such as power wheelchairs and e-scooters for the disabled are permitted everywhere.
The state vehicle code also comes into play. Recreational electric scooters are not permitted anywhere but on private property (with permission.) They cannot be used on the street or on any public sidewalk by anyone of any age.
The state vehicle code also does not permit children under the age of 16 to operate any type of e-bike/pedal assist bike on roads or sidewalks.
We know this is complicated, so please see the chart below for details and illustrations.
