The ice rink repairs are complete and the facility re-opened September 5, nearly one month ahead of schedule.

The ice rink underwent extensive repairs starting on March 6, 2017. The project included the full replacement of both ice floors, refurbishing of the dasher boards in both rinks, and replacing all of the rubber skate flooring throughout the facility. The estimated total cost of the project is $1.94 million.

PROJECT UPDATES

August 31, 2017

  • Installed glass partition and doors between rinks.

  • Started ice plant and began to cool the rink slab.

  • Commenced cleaning the facility.

  • Made final adjustments to dasher boards.

  • Began ice-making process.

  • Removed construction fence and contractor equipment.

  • Building will re-open September 5.

August 21, 2017

  • Completed installation of dasher boards in main and studio rinks.

  • Completed installation of rubber flooring in studio and main rinks.

  • Installed glycol in cold and warm floors.

  • Completed coating of both rink floors with white sealant.

August 11, 2017

  • Completed installation of expansion joint for rink perimeters.

  • Commenced installation of dasher boards in studio and main rinks.

  • Completed installation of rubber flooring in locker rooms and hallway.

  • Commenced installation of rubber flooring in studio and main rinks.

  • Completed installation of raised deck along south wall of main rink.

  • Completed insulating and connecting transmission mains.

August 4, 2017

  • Contractor returned to the site.

  • Removed concrete curing blankets.

  • Removed temporary expansion joint around rink perimeters.

  • Refurbished dasher boards delivered to the site.

  • Lobby benches re-coated.

  • New snack bar tables and chairs received.

  • Recreation staff continue painting in the rink areas.

July 21, 2017

  • Completed painting in lobby and restrooms.

  • Commenced painting feature walls in main and studio rinks.

  • Contractor to return to site on August 1.

July 13, 2017

  • Competed wire mesh installation in the studio rink.

  • Completed installation of dasher board anchors in main and studio rinks.

  • Completed installation of concrete floors in main and studio rinks.

  • Concrete floors begin the 28-day curing period.

  • MLHA completed painting of Locker Rooms A and B.

  • Commenced removal of protective poly sheeting and started clean up.

  • Revised estimate for opening day is September 1.

July 7, 2017

  • Competed cold floor tubing installation in the studio rink.

  • Completed wire mesh installation in main rink.

  • Commenced wire mesh installation in the studio rink.

  • Completed installation of rubber skate flooring in lobby and restrooms.

  • Completing final preparations for rink floor concrete pour on main and studio rinks on July 10 and 11.

  • MLHA began donated improvements to Locker Rooms A and B.

June 29, 2017

  • Completed pipe chair and rebar installation in studio rink.

  • Completed cold floor tubing installation in main rink.

  • Commenced cold floor tubing installation in studio rink.

  • Began installation of rubber skate flooring in lobby and restrooms.

  • Recreation staff members are working on painting the lobby and restrooms.

June 23, 2017

  • Installed insulation and vapor barrier in both rinks.

  • Installed cold floor headers in both rinks.

  • Completed pipe chair and rebar installation in main rink.

  • Commenced pipe chair and rebar installation in studio rink.

June 14, 2017

  • Completed perimeter concrete installation in studio rink.

  • Completed installation of transmission mains.

  • Completed installation of warm floor in main and studio rinks.

  • Backfilled over warm floors and commenced fine grading.

June 2, 2017

  • Completed cleaning of header trench.

  • Completed perimeter concrete pour in the main rink.

  • Completed demolition of the transmission mains.

  • Completed forming for perimeter concrete pour in the studio rink.

  • Commenced pouring studio rink perimeter concrete.

  • Began fusing new transmission mains for the warm floor.

May 26, 2017

  • Completed and passed dryness and compaction testing.

  • Completed demolition of header pipes.

  • Commenced cleaning of header trench.

  • Began forming for perimeter concrete pour in the main rink.

May 12, 2017

  • Completed installation of underdrain in studio rink.

  • Completed initial grade in main and studio rinks.

May 5, 2017

  • Completed excavation in main rink.

  • Completed installation of underdrain in main rink.

  • Commenced excavation for underdrain in studio rink.

  • Continued demolition of header pipes.

April 28, 2017

  • Excavated test pit and confirmed soil has completely thawed.

  • Removed subsoil heat tubing.

  • Filled header trench beyond bleachers.

  • Commenced excavation of subfloor.

  • Commenced excavation for underdrains.

April 21, 2017

  • Transmission mains passed the pressure test.

  • Completed ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey which indicates frost is no longer present.

  • Stopped ground thaw system.

  • Preparing for excavation to confirm GPR results.

April 7, 2017

  • Continued ground thawing process.

  • Continued demolition of header piping.

  • Commenced pressure testing on main transmission lines.

March 25-31, 2017

  • Completed installation of defrost tubing and insulation blankets on main and studio rinks.

  • Completed core drilling for the installation of temperature probes in both rinks.

  • Continued demolition of header piping.

  • Started all (6) ground thawing machines and began recirculating warm glycol on both rink surfaces.

March 18-24, 2017

  • Completed removal of concrete in main and studio rinks.

  • Completed removal of floor insulation in both rinks.

  • Completed removal of rubber skate flooring.

  • Commenced demolition of header trench piping.

  • Glycol sent to laboratory for testing. 

March 11-17, 2017
  • Contractor completed staging and construction fence installation.

  • Completed removal of the dasher boards.

  • Completed demolition of rink corners and team bench areas.

  • Commenced removal of rubber skate flooring.

  • Glycol was drained and stored.

  • Completed saw cutting of main rink concrete slab.

  • Completed saw cutting of studio rink concrete slab.

  • Commenced removal of concrete in main rink.

March 6-10, 2017

  • Rink project is underway.

  • Recreation staff shut down ice plant and commenced ice removal.

  • Contractors began staging on site.
